That’s why I make it a habit to read two or three books at once to keep things interesting. Right now, I’m reading The Plot by Irving Wallace and Darshan Vishwa by Chandrakant Bakshi. I also have Saraswatichandra, Kitne Pakistan, and The Old Man and the Sea waiting for their turn. In the midst of all this, my copy of Ashwini Bhatt's Kamthan (ISBN: 978-81-8440-141-7), which I ordered as an experiment from a new website, arrived just in time. Even though I’ve read Kamthan at least five times before, I couldn’t resist diving in again.
Initially, I thought I’d wait to read it until I finished the other books. But as I lay in bed that night, I started feeling guilty, like I was ignoring a dear relative who had come to visit. So, I picked up Kamthan and, just like that, finished it in one sitting. It was a relief. Kamthan is like the Gujarati novel equivalent of the film Hera Pheri—no matter how many times you read it, it never gets old, and you’ll find yourself laughing every time.
In the foreword, Ashwini Bhatt modestly describes the book as a light and humorous story meant for a fun, easy read. He says, "If it makes you laugh, then consider it a success as a comedy." However, in the article "Ashwini Bhatt no Kamthan" by Vinod Bhatt, which precedes the foreword, Vinod Bhatt writes, "The first response after reading this comic novel is that Ashwini has proven that comic writing isn't reserved for anyone’s father alone."

The story kicks off with three quirky characters: a tea seller, a banana seller, and a leaf seller. They are soon joined by Prabhu Singh Fajdar, Sub-Inspector Malek, Pandya Sahib, and their crew. Champaben Champaneri’s unexpected entry adds to the hilarity, leading to a sequence at Dr. Desai’s clinic where another comical scene unfolds. Here, Jayanti Jagurt enters, followed by Nanu Navsar and the wart-ridden Ranasahib, who also make appearances. Readers of Bhatt's other works, like Kasab and Karamat, will be familiar with Chanabhai, Babubhai, and their family. The dramatic encounter between them and the police, along with Makuji and Gotu, culminates in a highly humorous ending, making Kamthan a book that’s impossible to put down once you start.
