History of AhmedabadAhmedabad seems like a kaleidoscope; it is both ancient and modern. On the one hand, it has spiritual peace and tranquility, but on the other hand it also has a busy modern life. Gandhi Ashram on the banks of Sabarmati River is the symbol of spiritual roots of India. Nowadays Ahmedabad is bustling with life and business activities.
Ahmedabad (pronounced) is the largest state of Gujarat and the seventh largest city in India. Situated on the banks of the Sabarmati river, the city is the headquarters of the Ahmedabad district and has been the capital of the state of Gujarat from 1 to 8.
Ahmedabad became a modern and large city during the English rule. During that time it was made a part of the Bombay Presidency. Ahmedabad was still an important part of Gujarat. It was the main location of the textile industry and was known as 'Manchester of the East' because of the textile industry established here.
Ahmedabad is situated on the banks of the river Sabarmati at an altitude of 5 m (5 ft) above sea level in north-central Gujarat in western India. Which is 1.5 sq. Spreads over an area of km (3 sq mi).
The city is situated in a dry and sandy area. There are several lakes in the city, the most famous of which is Kankaria Lake, the most famous of Ahmedabad. Apart from this, there are other major lakes like Japarapur Lake, Narola / Sarkhej, Chandola Lake, Lal Bahadur Shastri Lake in Bapunagar, Malaw Lake in Jivraj Park, Vatawana Bibi Lake.
Importance of Ahmedabad
- Sardar Patel had moved from Ahmedabad to the political arena.
- Mahatma Gandhi established the Kocharb Ashram on the west bank of the Sabarmati River, which is known today as Kasturba Ashram and the second Ashram in Sabarmati area near Vadaj which is today known as Gandhi Ashram. During Gandhiji's rule, Ahmedabad became the headquarters of the Indian freedom struggle because of Gandhi.
- Gujarat Vidyapeeth was founded by Gandhiji in Ahmedabad.
- Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was born in Ahmedabad and Sarabhai industry flourished in Ahmedabad. With their cooperation Indian Space Research Center (ISRO), Textile Research Center (Atira) and Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) were established in Ahmedabad.
- With the efforts and cooperation of businessmen such as Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Engineering College (LD Engineering) and Lt. D. Arts colleges and other institutions were established.
- Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM), a first class institution in India and Asia, is located in Ahmedabad. Apart from this, National Institute of Design, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Communication and Information Technology (DA-IICT) and Plasma Research Institute (IPR) are also located in Ahmedabad.
- Ahmedabad has become the equivalent of other metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai today.
- Ahmedabad is the first city in India with BRTS, Metro and 8MTS facilities.
